Blackberries are native to Asia, Europe. North America, Australia, Africa and South America and have the most widespread geographic origin of any fruit crop. It follows that blackberries grown in specific regions are largely derived from species indigenous to those regions and no single species dominates world production. Blackberries have been used in Europe for over 2000 years; they are consumed as food, employed for medicinal purposes, and planted in hedgerows to keep out intruders.
The ideal terrain in Oregon has made our raspberries and blackberries the most sought after berries in the world. Oregon produces 85% of the nation’s blackberries and blackberry varieties, 95% of the nation’s black raspberries, 50% of the Boysenberries and 10% of the red raspberries harvested commercially in the US.
Blackberries prefer a climate with wet, cool springs lasting well into June and hot summer days with cool nights that let the berries stay on the vine for the perfect sweetness and great taste.
In Oregon, blackberries ripen and are harvested August through September.
