Boysenberries are thought to be a cross between a red raspberry and a western dewberry. Discovered in the late 1920s, these large, deep maroon berries are considered a blackberry cultivar.
Oregon is the world's leader in blackberry and boysenberry production, but they are also grown in Washington, British Columbia as well as in emerging markets in South America.
Boysenberries enjoy mild winters and warm summers with soil that is slightly acidic and well drained.
Boysenberries are at their peak from early July to early August in Oregon.
